Classic Stage Ireland returns to the enduring masterpieces of theatre with a new production of The Bacchae. The last and greatest work by Euripides, one of the most intriguing Ancient Greek playwrights, The Bacchae contains some of the most powerful and unusual scenes in all of ancient drama.
The play begins as the god Dionysus descends on the city of Thebes accompanied by his wild band of female worshippers - the Bacchae - to demand that Pentheus, the headstrong young King of Thebes, lift his prohibition against the god’s ecstatic rites. In the face of Pentheus’ increasingly blasphemous defiance, Dionysus sets in motion a shocking ritual of humiliation and destruction.
This CSI production uses a rare translation and CSI’s largest cast ever, once again assembled from the very best of Ireland’s young and emerging talent. Some of our finest young Irish actresses take on the terrifying poetry of the Chorus; and Lesa Thurman, who starred in previous CSI productions The Winter's Tale (Paulina) and Twelfth Night (Maria), returns as Agave. Nick Devlin stars as Cadmus, with Steve Cash as the rebellious Pentheus and Dylan McDonough as the god Dionysus.
